MIL-DTL-18714F (OS)
4.6.3 Detail strip. The primer shall be disassembled by the government facility designated in the contract
or order to determine conformance to the requirements of Table XXVIII.
4.6.4 Electrical resistance. The primer electrical resistance shall be measured by using a test circuit which
limits the bridge current to 50 milliamperes maximum. The primer stock and the electrode shall be used as
terminals. 15-20 lb-force shall be applied to the electrode during resistance measurement with a probe having
a 0.050 ± 0.005 inch spherical radius. Assure that contact on clean bright surfaces is obtained.
4.6.5 Function. The government facility designated in the contract or order shall evaluate the primer as
described in 4.6.5.1 through 4.6.5.3.2.
4.6.5.1 Test conditions. The test for function shall be conducted at 70°F ± 20°F. The test fixture shall hold
the primer securely at the primer stock external threads with no other support.
4.6.5.2 Ignition. The primer shall be initiated by the application of an electrical current through a steel
firing pin with a tip spherical radius of 0.127 ± 0.013 cm (0.050 ± 0.005 inch). The firing pin tip shall be free
of corrosion or foreign materials. The firing pin tip shall apply 71.172 - 97.861 Newtons (16-22 lb-force) of
axial force to the primer electrode. The power supply shall provide an open circuit, direct current potential of
20.0 ± 0.5 volts dc at the primer fixture. The closing of firing key (CFK) mechanism shall be a solid-state
firing switch. The firing circuit resistance shall be adjusted to provide 10 ± 0.2 amps with a current rise time
of 50 microseconds maximum after CFK and shall be able to maintain the current requirement for 0.1 seconds
minimum.
4.6.5.3 Data measurement. The primer function time shall be measured from the application of current
(fire power) until the first indication of light at either hole of the first pair of vent holes on the primer. The light
detector units (see 4.6.5.3.2) shall be placed as indicated in Figure 2.
